The Germiston Football Club hosted their annual prize-giving ceremony recently, at the Germiston City Sports Club, in Delville.
Three teams from the club performed exceptionally well throughout the season.
The u-7 team won both their league and the Elsburg Jomo Cosmos Football Club tournament, while the u-15 team came second in their league.
The u-17s made the club proud, as they won the Super League, the cup and also managed to make the podium in other tournaments in which they participated throughout the year.
This is the third year that the u-17 team has won the league, and they promise to keep the trophy in their hands for years to come.
Other exciting news for the club is that nine players from their u-17 team and one from the u-15s received provincial colours.
“It only goes to show that hard work really pays, because people might see the end result as us holding the cup, but the blood, sweat and tears that the players endure are often not seen; these boys work really hard and they show dedication and passion even during practise,” said one of the u-17 coaches, Len van Rooyen.
Goalkeeper of the year, team of the year and player of the year were among the trophies that were received at the ceremony.
During the season, two of the club’s coaches, Gerald Habib and Len van Rooyen, received their district colours.
“It was a good season indeed and the certificates, medals and trophies the players received were well deserved, we are proud of them,” said Gerald Habib, the u-15 coach.
The club ended the year with the prize-giving, and they are looking forward to next year.
“We are a small club, but we always manage to bring some silverware home,” said the club registrar and treasurer Alida Hovelmeier.
The one thing that stood out throughout the ceremony is the strong unity between the players and the coaches; they were calling each other names, applauding each other and sharing jokes.
The club would appreciate any form of sponsorship as it will help with kit, transport and other essentials.
Anyone who might be interested in joining the club is more than welcome.
