Hard work pays off

Local school receives generous donation.

As part of their ongoing commitment to the communities in which CompAir SA operates, the company recently undertook a project to help with maths education at a local, underprivileged school.

The company provided “My Maths Buddy” maths dictionaries to Grade Three pupils at Sekgutlong Primary School, in Katlehong.

Coupled with this was a training session for the teachers, to learn how to use these dictionaries.

The books were only the beginning of the company’s gift to the school.

As part of the gifts, CompAir (the Germiston branch of which is located in Wadeville) decided to build the school a netball court.

This project to improve the school was also aimed at encouraging the company’s employees to get involved in similar projects.

The 42 employees who volunteered to build the netball court were able to work together to construct it in just three days.

“We were able to use our own portable compressor and BORA breaker, as well.

“Although it was hard work, the employees had a great deal of fun and many interacted with the children,” said Marc Willmers, the business director.

The netball court was officially handed over to the school during an emotional presentation ceremony, attended by the school’s teachers, 740 pupils, community members and CompAir SA employees.

During the ceremony teachers who attended the “My Maths Buddy” training session were awarded certificates for completing their training and are now better equipped to teach the children mathematics, using the donated maths dictionaries.

The day ended with principal Olga Maja thanking the company and all the volunteers involved in the project, while a pupil presented Gerrie Coetzee, spokesman for CompAir SA, with a certificate and trophy, as a token of the school’s appreciation.

Willmers added: “The provision of maths dictionaries and the building of the netball court was a tremendous opportunity for the CompAir team in South Africa to interact with and assist those who are less fortunate.

“We enjoyed the fact that we were making a difference to these children.

“My thanks to all those who were involved in this and we wish the school every success in their maths marks. “We can’t wait to see how the school does next year, in terms of maths and on the netball court.”
