After the Germiston SPCA confiscated a dog which had been beaten with a metal pipe, on January 21, in Rondebult (GCN, January 31), many members of the community expressed their outrage.
Laurence Kingston, manager of the Germiston SPCA, told the GCN that they are still obtaining reports and witness statements concerning the case.
“The witnesses are children, so the matter is not an easy task; we have to get the parents involved in obtaining their statements,” he said.
“As soon as this has been done the SPCA can move forward.”
Kingston did, however, furnish the GCN with a preliminary report from the veterinarian who saw to the severely beaten dog.
The report states, among other things, that the female cross-breed dog was unconscious and non-responsive to painful stimuli when she was brought in.
This indicates severe cranial trauma (brain damage).
Her right eye was proptosed (hanging out of the socket), there was blood in her throat and she had difficulty breathing.
There was a large haematoma in the area of her left lower jaw, as well as a laceration on her tongue approximately two centimetres in length.
She had blood coming out of her nose (epistaxis) and a fractured lower jaw was palpable.
There was an open wound on her left shoulder, approximately 5cm long.
The community of Germiston has expressed its horror at the incident.
One resident said: “When you see something as heartbreaking as this, you don’t know what to think of the person involved.
“How can a ‘normal’ human being do something like this?
“This abnormal person should be put in the same situation as this dog and let’s see if they enjoy being beaten with a steel pipe.”
Another resident said: “I am speechless; I don’t have words to describe what I am feeling inside.
“God created animals to be our friends; what kind of person can be so brutal?
“They must give people like this to the community to deal with.”
Someone else said that the perpetrator needs to be locked up and the same done to him.
“I am so disgusted and sick to my stomach just imagining what went through the dog’s mind,” she added.
“For what you have done to this poor animal, may you be punished; you make me sick,” said another resident.
Another angry reader asked: “How can anyone be so cruel to animals?
“I truly believe that any person who can hurt any living creature of God like this cannot have a heart or feelings.
“This is extremely sad.”
A Lambton resident said that she hoped the same thing would happen to the perpetrator and that he would go to jail and be given a harsh sentence.
Karin van Heerden told the GCN she was outraged and shocked at the story.
“Who and what type of person does this to an animal?” she asked.
“If a person can do this to an animal, he should not be in society.
“This is unacceptable; a person who do this must be locked up in jail and a picture of his face should be shown to the public.”
