Sub-station doors a target for thieves

Sub-station open to the elements after theft.

Delville Business Park businesses are concerned about the sub-station in their area.

Corrie Dunkerley, from Vari-Plug, in Lilo Street, contacted the GCN to tell us that the doors to the sub-station had been stolen about two weeks ago.

“This is a great worry to us,” she said.

“When it rains the water comes straight into the sub-station onto all the fuses and cables and this is not safe; this is going to cause power problems for us.”

The GCN contacted the metro for comment on the issue and the department of communications and brand management responded: “As we are experiencing thefts of this nature, a specialised door is currently being fabricated.

“We expect it to arrive in the next week.

“Thefts of sub-station doors have become prevalent in the Germiston area, but there has been no other damage to the sub-station.

“We have appointed a security company to conduct investigations in the areas where theft is prevalent.”
