Three arrested for Leondale killing

Man shot and set alight in Leondale.

A man died when he was shot and set alight in Leondale, on Thursday morning.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene to find SAPS members already present and the man’s body lying near the off-ramp.

His clothes were still smouldering.

According to Russel Meiring, the emergency media and client liaison coordinator for ER24, evidence on scene showed that the patient had sustained a bullet wound to his head before being set alight.

Capt Tsekiso Mofokeng, from the SAPS Provincial Communications Department told the GCN that the incident took place at about 8am.

“It is alleged that the man, in his 20s, entered a house in Phumola, near Leondale,” he said.

“It is unknown why he entered the house but, after he got in, a woman inside the house saw him and screamed.

“Her husband and members of the community then chased him and captured him.”

Mofokeng said that it is further alleged that the man was severely beaten and doused with petrol before being set alight.

He could not confirm whether or not the man had been shot.

Three men, aged between 35 and 65, were arrested with regard to the incident and they are due to appear in court soon, on a charge of murder.

“The matter is being investigated by the SAPS and more arrests might be made in connection with the incident,” Mofokeng said.
