Through the lens

Ekurhuleni presents youth photographic exhibition.

Ekurhuleni is home to an abundance of talented artists with no proper platforms or opportunities to expand their artistic knowledge.

In celebration of Youth Month, the City of Ekurhuleni will host the Ekurhuleni Youth Photographic Exhibition (YEPE), which will open at the Springs Art Gallery on June 21.

The opening of the exhibition will run from 3pm to 10pm, the Ekurhuleni Musical School will provide entertainment, and pop-up craft and a design market will be among the things to be enjoyed on the day.

The exhibition features specially selected contemporary images by students from the city’s photography project.

Alongside other forms of artistic discipline, photography is a specialised field which requires specific equipment and technical knowledge.

In 2012, the Ekurhuleni Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture introduced the photography project in Tembisa, where students are taught the basics of photography.

In 2013, the beginners’ photography classes were rolled out to Duduza, where a group of 15 individual amateur and aspiring photographers, aged between 13 and 35 years learned to see the world through the lens.

There are now a total of 30 students in the two areas.

YEPE will feature the students’ fresh, cutting-edge works, inspired by various spaces across Ekurhuleni.

The 59 photographs have been curated in collaboration with the Vaal University of Technology’s Photography Department of Visual Arts and Design.

They vary in subject and include various themes relating to our modern-day lives.

Members of the public are welcome to visit the Springs Art Gallery, where entrance to the exhibition, which will run until August 30, is free of charge.

The gallery is open on weekdays, from 9am to 4.30pm, and on Saturdays, from 8am to midday.

The exhibiting photographers are; Langa Mandla, Majola Phumla, Manxala Inno, Motaung Refiloe, Msibi Thabisile, Mtshali Vusi, Nkwanyana Themba, Rakgabyane Mirriam, Semake Tirrello, Short Moses, Sibeko Thabo and Sibisi Bafana.
