The GCN was called to the scene of an overturned truck, on Monday, June 23.
The vehicle, which appeared to be transporting scrap metal, overturned on Barbara Road, in the Woodmere area.
The GCN was able to reach the EMPD for comment.
Thabiso Makgato, responding on behalf Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD, told the GCN: “The driver of the truck suffered serious injuries to the head and chest, and was taken to Union Hospital for treatment.
“The accident is confirmed to have happened at 10.45am and EMPD officers were able to clear the scene and reopen Barbara Road to traffic at 2pm (June 23).
“It is believed that the driver lost control of the truck, but the matter is still being investigated.”
While the EMPD investigates this latest accident, residents have voiced their concerns and frustrations.
Graeme Hopper reached out to the GCN via our title site, www.germistoncitynews.co.za.
“About five or six people have died on that corner this last year alone and all that they do is to install flashing danger lights,” he said.
“If the council does not want to put up speed bumps then put up cameras or have regular speed traps.
“Let the lazy people get off their lazy butts and do some work.
“When there is an accident then the traffic department only arrives when somebody has died or when it is fatal.
“We are too scared to even cross over a green robot at the Barbara Road, Pretoria Road intersection.
“Let’s see if somebody can do something constructive to prevent the accidents and deaths on this section of road.”
A number of residents made contact through Facebook.
Jenny Williams asked: “Was the truck road worthy?”
“The way they load these trucks up is madness.
“Seriously?
“Another one?
“They need to close Barbara Road off to trucks.
“The trucks shouldn’t even be travelling on this road and the speeds they travel, trucks and cars alike, it makes entering and leaving our driveways a safety hazard.”
“As a resident of Barbara Road, I really hope something happens soon” said Vicki-Jayne Hopper.
Kaylene Pohlmann Ferreira said: “We need speed bumps.
“More than once a week we have drama on Barbara Road.”
“We have asked countless times what can be done to make this road safer; we are still waiting for an answer,” said husband and wife, Mark and Ella Pricloo.
Gerhard Vatti van Zyl commented: “These truck drivers can’t drive.”
The GCN has yet to receive comment on what can be done to make Barbara Road safe for motorists and residents alike.
