The lovely 23-year-old Jordan Airey, recently won “best red carpet look for 2014” and placed fifth overall in the “Apprentesses of Angelique Gerber” pageant.

She was among the 60 girls who took part in the final, on Saturday, July 19.

The lovely 23-year-old Airey has lived in Germiston all her life and currently resides in Wadeville.

When asked if she had been affected but the recent strikes she said, with relief: “Luckily not, we stay on the outskirts of Wadeville, so the strikes didn’t reach us.”

Airey started modelling two years ago and has participated in several pageants to date.

“One of the most exciting pageants was when I went over to Italy to compete.

“The language barrier was a bit of a challenge, but it was still an amazing experience,” she explained.

She first heard about “Apprentesses of Angelique Gerber” through Facebook.

“I entered, but thought I hadn’t got in when I hadn’t heard anything for three months,” she said.

This, however, was not the case and she received word to say she had made into the competition.

When asked what she would take away from the experience, Airey replied: “Firstly, I will always treasure the friendships I made during the competition.

“Secondly, I found that this competition inspired me not just during the time I spent in the pageant, but in life as a whole.

“I felt that a lot of things were brought into perspective, such as how I feel about our country.

“Instead of just looking at the negative, for example, the latest Numsa strikes, I am now able to find the positive in the situation.

“I also enjoyed working with the different charities involved in the competition.”

Airey got involved with the St Laurence Children’s Home, Leth’ukukhany, Sedibend and the Door of Hope during her time in the competition, and has continued to volunteer at the Door of Hope in her own time.

“I think it is one thing to be involved with a charity for a competition, but it is something different when you do it out of your own free will,” she said

Talk turned to the final week in the “Apprentesses of Angelique Gerber”, which proved a very busy time for Airey.

“We were busy from the moment we arrived in Pretoria,” she said.

The week involved the painting of a school through Jollige Jakkers in Krugersdorp, a workshop with the team from World Shakers History Makers, pre-judging and, of course, preparing for the grand finale.

What is next for Airey?

“I am currently competing in the Miss Gauteng pageant,” she said.

When asked about the differences between Miss Gauteng and “Apprentesses of Angelique Gerber” Airey said: “I feel that Miss Gauteng offers a better platform.

“The “Apprentesses” gave us the opportunity to follow in Angelique Gerber’s footsteps, whereas Miss Gauteng offers you a chance to create your own.

“And who doesn’t want that?”

The finals of this competition will be held on August 9, at Monte Casino.

In closing, Airey said with a brilliant smile: “I think it is important to be determined.

“You are able to reach your goals, no matter what they are, through determination and hard work.

“Inspire to be inspired.”
