The GCN received a query from a concerned motorist, Mike Huggins, regarding Main Road, on August 6.
Huggins told GCN that he was worried about the hole that he keeps passing on the road.
“A while back, there was water leaking from that site for some time, but the municipal workers came and dug in search of the problem,” he said.
“The water seems to have stopped but the site remains uncovered.”
Huggins added that the hole has been left unattended for months.
“Soon after they managed to block the leak, which we are grateful for, they just put a safety tape around the digging and left it at that,” he said.
That safety tape has now fallen into the hole, together with the rubbish that is being dumped in it.
The hole, rocks and sand go right into the one lane motorists have to use, and it also stretches to the pavement.
As a result, pedestrians are left to walk on the road.
Huggins’s concerns relate mainly to the safety of both pedestrians and motorists using the road.
“The problem is that people are forced to walk on the road, because that portion of the pavement is filled with rocks and sand,” he explained.
I am worried”, as one can imagine what could happen at night, but I trust that the municipality will attend to this matter soon.”
Huggins said he has, on several occasions, tried to contact the metro’s call centre, but the phone just keeps ringing without an answer.
The metro told the GCN the excavation would be attended to as soon as possible.
“The excavation will be closed by not later than tomorrow, August 8, and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality apologises for any inconvenience caused,” said Themba Radebe, spokesman for the metro.
However, the only thing municipal workers did, pertaining to the comment, was to put another safety tape around the hole, which, to this day, remains uncovered.
