Is the crime rate on the rise in Belhambra Road?
Resident unhappy with metro and SAPS service.
The Germiston City News received a call from Primrose resident Meifie Taljard, who said that both her cat and her dog had been killed recently.
“My cat was poisoned and my dog’s neck broken within a week,” Taljard said.
The reason for their deaths, she claimed, was the lack of street lights in Belhambra Road, Primrose East.
“These street lights have been off for between four to five months,” she explained.
“The darkness in the street has led to an increase in the crime rate in the area.”
She claimed she has reported the matter to the metro several times, but nothing has been done.
The GCN forwarded the matter to the metro and received the following statement:
“The matter has been attended to and the lights have been repaired,” said the metro’s department of communications and brand management’s Lebogang Ramashala.
Taljard then told the GCN that she doesn’t feel that the Primrose police have done enough about the deaths of her cat and dog.
The GCN sent a query to the Primrose police to find out:
q What is being done?
q Has progress been made in the case?
q Have there been other cases similar to this one?
Communications officer for the Primrose police, Sgt Styles Maome, released the following statement: “A case of malicious damage to property was opened with us by Meifie Taljard.
“The matter is being investigated, but no arrests have been made to date.
“There is no mention of a dog or a cat in the case document.
“If the complainant has additional information to the case she should contact the detective in charge of her case.
“Alternatively, she can contact the station commander.”
