The metro is calling on truck owners with a gross vehicle mass of 3 500kg or more to visit its testing stations for a free vehicle assessment.
The free vehicles assessment campaign is open for the entire month of October, to mark National Transport Month.
The participating testing stations include those in Germiston, Nigel, Springs, Brakpan, Boksburg and Kempton Park.
“Ensuring that we have roadworthy vehicles on our roads is fundamental for us as a metro, as we have a high volume of heavy vehicles driving in and out of Ekurhuleni, because of the large industries that we have in our municipal area.
“We also encourage public operators to continue to test their vehicles on a regular basis, even beyond the campaign,” said MMC on transport Clr Thumbu Mahlangu.
The free test campaign seeks to curb fatal road accidents as a result of vehicle un-roadworthiness.
The owners of taxis and buses are also encouraged to bring in their vehicles for testing.
The assessment involves the checking of tyres, brakes, the handbrake, the steering mechanism and the general condition of the vehicle.
The MMC encouraged all public transport operators to seize the opportunity to be informed about the roadworthy status of their vehicles, so that corrective measures can be taken and deadly accidents prevented.
