Disgruntled Marlands resident Johan Esterhuyse recently called the GCN to report a series of problems he is having with the mini-dump located close to his home, in Wit Street.
His main concerns are:
- The rat infestation.
He has experienced an increase in the number of rats in his home.
- The people who have started living on the dump.
These people are burning rubbish close to the boundary wall of his home.
He is also concerned about the sudden increase in the number of people in and out of the area, as he feels this could lead to an increase in the crime rate in the area.
But Esterhuyse is not the only Marlands resident who has concerns about this dump.
Claudette Voget commented on the GCN’s website: “We live three streets away from there and we see on a daily basis what’s going on at that dump.
“We rather make use of Boksburg due to the fact that it’s tidy without beggars.
“We feel sorry for the residents close to the dumping site.”
Shane Shannon added his experiences with the mini-dump to the growing list of complaints, saying: “The mini-dump in Marlands is in a state, nowadays it’s not just illegal people occupying that the dumpsite waiting to scavenge what gets dumped there, they seem to have started a recycling business there.
“They burn cables to regain any copper or metal from them, my house is constantly smells of smoke, not to mention the litter and smell from the dumpsite.

“I really cannot understand why the dumpsite can’t be moved out of a residential area, please look at this problem from my side, please help in this situation.”
The GCN sent a query to the metro to find out what could be done about the situation, and Themba Gadebe, of the metro’s department of communications and brand management, responded with the following statement:
“The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has appointed a contractor to manage, control and clean the mini disposal sites.
“Activities taking place outside the premises are not the metro’s responsibility – although, on many occasions, these activities were reported to the EMPD and the police.
“Members of the community are advised to contact the policing entities to report any incidents.”
