Local centre to benefit from Charity Mile

The Emperors Palace Charity Mile will aid 16 charities.

Katlehong’s Reahile Primary After Care Centre is backing a horse.

The staff and children at the centre are hoping that As You Like powers to the finish line in first position at the Emperors Palace Charity Mile, on November 1, at Turffontein Racecourse.

Should the Alec Laird trained horse do this the centre will win the top prize of R100 000.

Reahile is one of 16 charities set to benefit from the Charity Mile this year.

The least amount the centre will walk away with is R20 000.

As well as being partnered with a horse, the charity also gets a celebrity partner, who will represent them on the day of the race.

Alex Caige (23) has been partnered with Reahile.

Caige is a DJ and master of ceremonies, as well as a contributor and traffic reporter on Anele Mdoda’s Afternoon Drive Show on 947 Highveld Stereo.

He also hosts his own show on the station, on Sunday afternoons.

The R600 000 Grade 2 event over 1 600m is a normal race in terms of the stake distribution for the horses’ owners, trainers and jockeys.

However, each of the 16 horses will also run for a charity.

A total of R550 000 is shared between the charities affiliated to the runners, whose finishing positions determine how much each will take home.

Reahile takes care of 88 children every afternoon.

The children are given a meal, homework is supervised and they have educational toys with which to play.
