Residents upset over pruning
Resident alleges that the metro is killing the city's trees.
Sandra Newton called the Germiston City News to report on how the metro are pruning the trees in Delville.
“They have pruned them to such an extent that they are killing them, some are already dead,” explained Newton.
This is of great concern to Newton and many other residents in the area, as they revere the old oak trees.
The GCN approached the metro for comment on this surprisingly upsetting situation.
Senior media officer Lebogang Ramashala, of the metro’s department of communication and brand management, responded to the GCN’s queries:
Q: Why are these trees being cut?
A: The residents requested that the trees on their pavements be pruned, as they cause electricity to trip when they interfere with the overhead power cables.
Q: Are the metro staff in charge of the pruning sure of what they are doing? Do they have experience in pruning?
A: Yes the staff in charge of the pruning are qualified and have experience.
Q: Is the metro aware that they are killing the trees in the area?
A: They are not killing the trees, only maintaining them.
Q: Can residents report matters such as these to the metro? If so, to who would they report the incidents?
A: Yes we encourage the community to report matters such as these.
