Training to better the community

Training is the key to success says the Germiston Red Cross Society.

Education and training remains one of the most important activities in the Red Cross Society.

The organisation’s health and care programme and the training department make a huge impact on the community.

Recently the Germiston branch of the South African Red Cross Society celebrated the graduation of their 2014 home-based care students.

The six-month home-based care course includes a two-month theory period where students are in class.

Constant evaluation and assessment and then the compilation of a portfolio of evidence, followed by a final written examination, ensure that the theory is completely covered before students are placed in old age homes, child care centres, hospices and homes for the physically and mentally challenged for the remaining four months.

Here they are monitored and evaluated.

Students are then issued with two certificates – one for home based care and the other for Level One first aid.

Competent care givers find employment in the health care industry, private homes and in community-based projects.

Many carry on to study further.

Zodwa Nkhambule (instructor, left), Sister Wendy Hahne (course moderator), Nurse Teresa Mhlanga (student liaison officer), Barbara Jensen (Germiston Red Cross manager) and Supuni Stanslas (senior instructor) were thrilled at their students’ achievements.

The society is well known as being the preferred service provider to individuals, factories, offices and businesses which are compelled by law to have qualified first aid personnel.

The Germiston branch offers Level One to Three first aid training.

Disaster management is one of the society’s core programmes.

It is, therefore, very important to educate communities on the risks and early warning signs, as well as disaster management.

The next full-time home based care course starts on January 13, next year and the part-time course starts on January 17.

There is a training fee involved.

The home based care course covers the following, among other topics: stimulation and care of infants and toddlers; frail care; care of the physically and mentally challenged; communication; TB; care of HIV and Aids patients and Level One first aid.
