Matric glee and tears

The wait is over for Germiston’s matrics.

The class of 2014 was full of excitement on Tuesday when the results of the National Senior Certificate examinations were released.

Germiston’s schools acquitted themselves well and principals throughout the city were pleased with the results.

The top performing school in the city was Hoërskool Goudrif with a 99.2 per cent pass rate.

The school had 123 pupils who achieved 62 distinctions among them.

From the school’s pupils, 67.5 per cent will be able to study at a tertiary institution.

Marius Mills, principal of Hoërskool Goudrif said, “I am very happy and humbled at our excellent pass rate.”

The school’s top four achievers were: Andries Steenkamp (seven distinctions), Brendon Roets (six distinctions), Margaretha Sieberhagen (five distinctions) and Stean Vorster (four distinctions).

The second top performing school was Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston with a pass rate of 97 per cent.

The school had 99 students who achieved 54 distinctions among them.

Forty two per cent attained a degree pass and 38 per cent a diploma pass.

Principal of the school Retha du Toit said she was very pleased for both the students and the teachers as they had all put in a huge effort to attain the results they did.

The school’s top students were: Megan O’Connell (six distinctions), Cherise Smit (five distinctions), Alison Lobo (four distinctions) and Quindal Da Costa Rosario (four distinctions).

Dawnview High School’s principal Moeketsie Kolokoto said he was very happy at his school’s 93.39 per cent pass rate.

The school had 108 matric students and 33 of those will be able to study further.

The school got 12 distinctions.

The top performing students were the school’s headgirl Mashia Lebea, Sphesihle Sibisi and Karabo Mofokeng, all with two distinctions.

Kolokoto said he was proud of Mashia, as well as Kehlohondo Lebea (president of the representative council of learners) who both led by example.

“Although Kehlohondo was not one of the top three students he achieved a degree pass and showed he was leading by example,” Kolokoto said.

“I appreciate all the teachers’ hard work and dedicate this achievement to them and hope that they will maintain this and work harder.”

Hoërskool Elspark recorded a 92 per cent pass rate.

The school had 108 matric pupils and 59.4 per cent of them achieved a degree pass while 23 per cent achieved a diploma pass.

Acting principal of the school Anne Botha said they were very pleased with the results.

A 91.7 per cent pass rate was recorded by Hoërskool Primrose High School.

The school had 144 matrics and 26.5 per cent of them qualified to study at tertiary institutions.

Fifty-five distinctions were achieved across the board and principal André Grobler said, “I am proud of my 2014 matriculants and wish them well.

“The new matrics must remember that it is hard work from day one.”

The school’s top achievers were: Musa Mthimunye, Xoliswa Ramushu and Mukhetwa Nemushungwa, who all achieved three distinctions.

Hoërskool Vryburger High School achieved a 91.6 per cent pass rate and 43 per cent of its students qualified to study further.

They had 147 matric students and collectively they achieved 36 distinctions.

Principal of the school Jannie Jordaan said, “We had a very successful year and I am extremely happy with the results in general although I am sad for those who failed.

“Many of our students got marks in the 60 and 70 per cent range and I believe that every child could have passed if they had put their heads down and worked.”

The top achieving pupils at the school were: Nicolet Young, Dylan Buissinne, Patience Maseko, Anthony Maher and Rowlene Vorster, all with three distinctions.

Germiston High School recorded a 90.44 per cent pass rate.

The school had 178 matric students and achieved a 50.31 degree pass.

The pupils attained 55 distinctions among them.

Deputy principal Reneè Goosen said, “The school is pleased with the results.”

The top performing student was Itumeleng Skosana with four distinctions.

An 89.1 per cent pass rate was recorded at Dinwiddie High School.

From the 221 matric students, 30.1 per cent attained a degree pass and 38.1 per cent achieved a diploma pass.

The school achieved 62 distinctions overall.

Principal David Mosenye said,” I am satisfied with this year’s results, especially since this was the biggest group of matric students we have ever had.

“From the 13 pupils who were pushed through to matric by the government, 12 of them passed and I am very pleased about this.”

The school’s top student was Tina Bubuya Tsamayi with four distinctions.

Hoërskool Elsburg attained an 83 per cent pass rate.

Forty per cent achieved degree passes while 40 per cent achieved diploma passes.

The school got eight distinctions across the board from its 41 matric students.

Principal Anna-Marie Meyer said, “I am happy with the results it is, however, unfortunate for those who didn’t make it.”
