Commuters travelling north on the N3 this morning were in for a nasty surprise when traffic came to a stand-still.
The delay was caused by a truck losing its load of steel cones.
The truck, which was on route to Johannesburg from Newcastle with two trailers loaded with steel cones, swerved and applied emergency brakes in order to avoid an accident just before the Heidelberg off ramp.
It was then that the steel cones fell off the trailer.
The load of steel fell into both the right and left lanes of the highway, bringing traffic to a stand-still.
Officials on scene were able to move the steel, allowing for only one lane to be closed.
EMPD officials are still on scene, waiting for a crane to come and clear the steel cones from the highway.
Traffic flow remains slow.
