Two men were recently arrested by the Primrose police and charged with common robbery.
The men, aged 22 and 23, were arrested after the victim informed a community patrol vehicle of the incident.
The girl alleged that she was walking in Hazel Street, on Wednesday, March 25, when she was approached by two men who asked her what she had in her schoolbag.
She said she had only her school books, but they grabbed the bag and searched it. They found her cellphone, which they took.
As the men ran away the girl was able to alert a nearby community patrol vehicle and the patrollers managed to chase down the suspects.
After the men had been apprehended the police were called to the scene and the suspects were handed over without injuries.
“We salute the community patrollers, who are working hand-in-hand with the police; this indicates that we are not going to tolerate crime in our area,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.
Both suspects will appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon.
