State of the City Address debated

Councillors weigh in on mayor’s speech.

Executive mayor of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Clr Mondli Gungubele, delivered the State of the City address last Wednesday, March 25, in the Germiston Council Chamber.

On Thursday, March 26, the floor was opened to parties to debate the speech.

A number of ANC councillors praised the mayor’s speech, welcoming the suggestions made to forward the metro, while offering advice on how to make the suggestions a reality.

A hot topic up for the debate was the implementation of a night shift cleaning crew.

Many councillors from the various parties wanted to know how this night shift would be run and who would oversee the project and workforce.

The DA brought up a number of issues, which had been discussed in greater detail at a press conference on Monday, March 23, outside the Makause informal settlement, in Primrose.

The venue was chosen to showcase what the DA claims is the true state of the city.

During his response to concerns brought up in the debate, the mayor announced changes to the mayoral committee.
