The shooting incident occurred just before the Jet Park bridge on the N12 highway, on September 1.
Members of the Hawks were acting on a tip-off about a suspicious looking charcoal Audi.
Gauteng provincial police spokesman Lieut-Col Katlego Mogale said a shoot-out ensued when members of the Hawks tried to pull over the Audi, which had three occupants in it.
The occupants of the Audi then fired shots at the police.
“Police returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect and leaving the other two injured,” said Mogale.
The GCN’s sister newspaper the Boksburg Advertiser was on the scene.
