A recent argument over a loose cigarette ended in murder in the Makause informal settlement.
Police have since arrested a Malawian man (28) for the crime.
“It is alleged that the accused stabbed the deceased, also Malawian, believed to between 30 and 35 years old, with a sharp object, twice in the upper body,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.
The Primrose police were first called the scene on a report of mob justice.
“We rushed to the informal settlement where community members handed over the accused and explained what had happened,” Maome said.
Once the mob had been cleared, paramedics were summoned to the scene where, on arrival, they declared the victim dead.
“We suspect liquor was involved as the man appeared to be drunk when he was arrested.
“We condemn this senseless killing,” Maome said.
The accused was taken to the Primrose Police Station where he was formally charged.
He has since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate Court, where the case was postponed for bail application.
