Three illegal taverns in the Marathon informal settlement were recently closed down during a Germiston cluster station operation.
“Officers raided three taverns and demanded to see the owners’ liquor licenses. None of the owners could produce a license,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose Police.
The three owners, aged between 27 and 35 years, were arrested and detained at the Primrose Police Station.
“We are experiencing a rise in alcohol abuse in our informal settlements and will continue to conduct similar operations,” said Maome.
The three men appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court on charges of selling liquor without a license.
Their cases were postponed for trial.
