Teenage mom appears in court for baby’s murder

The young mother of the four-month-old baby found dead in a shack in Katlehong has appeared in court for murder.

The Katlehong police have arrested the 16-year-old mother of the baby (four months) found dead in a shack, recently (GCN, January 29).

The mother was arrested, last Tuesday evening, after she voluntarily went back to her home.

The baby girl’s body was discovered by a nine-year-old girl in a shack in the Ndlazi Section of Katlehong.

Capt Mega Ndobe, communications officer for the Katlehong police, said, “The police were informed of her arrival and she was arrested.

“It was discovered that the mother was aware of her baby’s problem and/or death.

“Since the investigation revealed that she was aware of what was happening to her baby, she will be charged with murder.”

It is alleged that the teenager left her baby girl on the bed lying face downwards and was fully aware that she couldn’t breathe or turn herself sideways to try and breathe.

She appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was charged with murder.

The case was postponed for further investigation.
