Winter is coming and temperatures are beginning to drop.
During the cold days, many residents in informal settlements throughout Germiston will look for different ways to keep warm, leaving themselves vulnerable.
In an effort to curb fire-related incidents in these communities, the metro launched its Pre-Winter Fire Awareness Campaign outside the Makause informal settlement, in Primrose, last Saturday.
The theme for the campaign is “Be Wise, Be Safe and Stay Alive” and it seeks to educate residents in informal settlements about the importance of the proper use of various sources of heat.
Sources, if left unattended, often result in fires that could cause death and loss of property.
“We have witnessed the loss of lives, including those of innocent children, due to shack fires that could have been prevented.
“The educational information shared through the campaign will go a long way in preventing the consequences of these fires,” said the spokesman for the metro, Themba Gadebe.
During the campaign, the metro introduced the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members to the community.

The 600 trained CERT members are charged with going into the Makause, Delport and Marathon informal settlements, to educate the residents about their chosen source of heat.
