Hawkers plying their trade illegally and those obstructing pavements and the Golden Walk Shopping Centre entrances were pounced upon by EMPD officers, on Friday afternoon between 2pm and 10pm.
Numerous items of clothing and other items were confiscated and fines and written warnings issued.
The special operation concentrated on High, Park, Plantation and Rand roads where the city’s by-laws are mostly flouted.

Hawkers illegally trading at the entrances to the Golden Walk – especially entrance five – were cleaned up.
Three hundred and forty-five winter jackets were confiscated along High, Park and Rand roads, as well as from the Golden Walk Mall entrance.
A hawker found without a permit had his wares comprising 84 leather waist belts seized and he was slapped with a R200 fine for obstructing a pavement.
The hawker was also issued with a written warning.

Three hawkers ran away leaving behind their wares of 13 handbags, items of traditional clothing, heaps of steel wool and crates used to display the items.
All the seized items were taken to the EMPD storage facility in Elsburg.
Hawkers can reclaim their goods by taking along their trading permit and by paying a R200 fine, as well as R150 for storage fees.
