Violence broke out in the Mandela, Nhlapo, Tshongweni, and Motloung sections, in Katlehong North, last night (Thursday), between locals and foreign nationals.
“This happened when foreign nationals attempted to force their way back into their tuck shops, from which they were chased away some months ago,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, communications official for the Katlehong SAPS.
No serious injuries have been reported, however, two suspects were arrested while the police were monitoring the situation.
The first, an 18-year-old man, was found trying to tamper with a foreign national’s vehicle. He was arrested on charges of attempted car theft.
The second, a 22-year-old man, was found breaking into a foreign national’s shop and was arrested on charges of business burglary.
The two men are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court, soon.
“Officers are investigating whether any other community members were involved in the crimes,” Ndobe said.
