Update: Shoot-out between cops and criminals leads to accident
The Germiston SAPS were chasing the armed suspects when the horrific accident occurred.
The Germiston police have given the GCN more information about the incident which led to the horrific accident involving a taxi and a vehicle driven by alleged criminals on Monday.
Capt George Raphulu, head of communications for the Germiston SAPS said: “At about 2pm our police received a tip-off that there was a white Mercedes Benz, with two armed occupants in it.
“The suspects drove onto the N3 highway and the police tried to stop it and the occupants started to shoot at the police and the police fired back.
“The driver of the Mercedes Benz drove straight into the taxi from behind.”
Raphulu added that this resulted in the taxi driver losing control of the vehicle and the taxi rolled several times.
“The police continued to chase the suspects but they managed to jump out of their getaway car and disappeared into some nearby bushes,” Raphulu said.
“The officers then returned to the scene of the accident and found four people dead.
“They then went to the suspects’ abandoned vehicle and found an unlicensed firearm inside it.
“A few number plates and registration discs with different registration numbers on them were also found in the vehicle.
“Continuing with their search the officers recovered a second unlicensed firearm which had been dropped on the ground.”
No arrests have been made as yet and the SAPS are continuing with their investigation.
