Undoubtedly, aware that they don’t possess trading permits and are obstructing pedestrians on pavements, hawkers in Katlehong and Thokoza opted to run and leave their wares behind rather than be arrested.
The special Bumper to Bumper operation was conducted last Friday, between 2pm and 10pm, focusing on those who contravene the municipality’s by-laws.
EMPD members concentrated on the problematic Kgotso, Hospital and Khumalo streets.
Two hundred counterfeit DVDs, 80 backpacks, 85 CDs, 13 carpets, 100 handbags, 12 winter jackets, a big box full of whiteners and detergents, six small paraffin stoves and 50 pairs of women’s underwear were confiscated.
In addition to this 20 pairs of socks, 11 advertising boards/signs, different types of rat poison, boxes of plastic goods, refuse bags and perishables such as fruits and vegetables, were also seized by the metro police.
All the seized goods were stored at the EMPD Vosloorus by-laws office and can be released on payment of a R200 fine.
Counterfeit goods cannot be reclaimed and highly perishable goods are discarded after 40 hours.
