Help Kowa Pienaar out of this crisis

The SAVF Kowa Pienaar Home is appealing to the community for help.

The SAVF Kowa Pienaar Home is currently in dire straits.

The home recently suffered a number of setbacks and it is appealing to local businesses and the community to lend a helping hand.

On October 29, a fire broke out in the municipal electricity box outside the old age home.

“Although the damage was minimal, we were without electricity for some time and some of our residents were traumatised,” said manager Emmie Herman.

“We urgently need to upgrade our generator in order to increase its capacity to handle more emergency plugs and lights.”

She added that the area around the electricity box also needs to be enclosed, to prevent unauthorised access.

To accommodate this, the home’s electric gate and fences need to be moved.

This will cost about R7 500.

To add to this, the home suffered a huge loss on November 1.

“Our Mercedes Benz Vito was stolen and only the market value of R110 000 will be paid out to us,” said Herman.

“To replace it will cost us R490 000 and we will need to install a lift for the wheelchairs as well, which will cost a further R80 000.

“We use our vehicle to transport our residents to and from hospital, to take them on outings and to do their and our business.

“We are now stranded for an unknown period, as we are unable to come up with the shortfall to replace our Vito.”
SAVF Kowa Pienaar Home officially opened on April 1, 1980.

It provides 24-hour care for 65 residents with chronic illnesses, who are in need of nursing care.

“Some of our residents have no family or financial support, which places us in a negative financial position,” Herman explained.

“We are, therefore, mostly dependent on our sponsors’ generosity and kindness to fill some of our essential needs.

“With the above in mind, it will be extremely difficult for us to replace our Vito and, therefore, we appeal for any type of help or donations.”
