Illegal taverns closed and three arrested

Three suspects were arrested during the closing of three illegal taverns.

In a continued effort to crack down on alcohol abuse in the informal settlements of Primrose, the Ekurhuleni West Cluster recently shut down three illegal taverns.

The taverns were closed during a foot patrol of the Makause and Delport informal settlements.

During the operation three suspects, two men and a woman, where arrested for selling liquor without a licence.

The accused, aged between 24 and 43 years, were arrested when they failed to produce their liquor licences when officers requested them to.

“We are appealing to the community to refrain from selling liquor without a licence, as it is a criminal offence to do so,” said communications officer for the Primrose police, Sgt Styles Maome.

The suspects have since appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court where they were released and warned to appear in court at a later date.
