Warning: Brace yourself for potential flooding, severe thunderstorms

South African Weather Service warns of severe thunderstorms and flooding, predicted to hit this afternoon heading into the weekend.

The South African Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the province heading into the weekend.

A 80 per cent chance of rain has been predicted for Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal today with chances dropping to 50 per cent on Saturday and Sunday.

This morning the service has released the following warnings for Gauteng:

  • Severe Thunderstorms:
Severe thunderstorms with the possibility of large hail and damaging winds and reduced visibility expected in some areas of Gauteng from 1pm to 11pm.
  • Damaging Winds

Strong winds are expected in parts of Gauteng, from this afternoon

  • Flooding:
Localised flooding is expected in  parts of the province until 10pm.
  • High discomfort values:
Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over some parts of Gauteng.

Residents are urged to take the necessary precautions when travelling and are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distances when driving.

Headlights should also be kept on at all times to increase visibility.

Residents should also ensure that they shelter their pets in extreme weather conditions.
