Network fault causes power outage

Marlands residents left without power or answers.

Marlands residents woke to darkness on Wednesday as a power outage blackened the suburb.

Many residents wanted answers as to what had caused the outage and when the power would be restored.

Nathan Brink told the GCN: “I have spoken to the metro and they told me that they cannot provide me with a reference number as the technician is fixing the problem.

“They also said they cannot provide me with a turnaround time with regards to the problem or say what the cause is,” he said.

The GCN made several attempts to get answers from the metro and finally received comment from Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, days later.

“There was a fault with the 33KV network between the Marlands and Germiston substations.

“This caused the power outage that affected the Marlands area,” he said.

Power was restored to the area by Thursday.

“The metro always tries to return the power supply back to normal as quickly as possible.

“However, turnaround time is dependent on the nature of the fault in the system,” Gadebe said.
