Sometimes I get the feeling the government is putting too much emphasis on the abilities and capabilities of our youth.
The case in point is the so-called youth empowerment programmes that both the local as well as national government are often heard talking about. I am a young person good enough, but I am at no stage ready to be given a R1-million government grant to start a business.
Firstly, despite my fantasies about being a successful entrepreneur one day, I have never had the experience of running, or operating my own business. The next most possible scenario is that I am more likely to be bankrupt in less that six months of receiving the grant and possibly just two months of operating the business.
In fact, what the authorities should be focusing on is creating incubation hubs for start-up entrepreneurs. These would then be operated under the guidance and watchful eyes of “coaches” or “tutors” who would then nurture these young people through the paces.
Otherwise, we are simply opening up an opportunity for young people to become corrupt businesses tomorrow.
