Watch: No sleeping on the job for Laerskool Oosterkruin learners

World Sleep Day challenge sees 43 learners squashing onto a mattress.

The Laerskool Oosterkruin school hall was filled with excited voices last Friday as children and teachers tried to see how many Grade Fours they could get onto a double-bed-sized mattress.

As the day marked World Sleep Day, Hirsch’s, together with Cloud Nine and Rest Assured, came up with the idea of seeing how many learners could fit onto a queen- or double-sized mattress.

The learners all had to remain on the mattress for 30 seconds.

Hirsch’s Meadowdale selected Laerskool Oosterkruin to represent them in the competition.

It took some doing but finally 43 children managed to squeeze themselves onto the mattress and remain there for the prescribed time.

Although she does not know if they have beaten all the other Hirsch’s stores as yet, Hirsch’s Meadowdale’s public relations officer Letitia Haywood was thrilled with the children’s attempt.

All schools which participate are awarded a sponge mattress to donate to a school of their choice, and if they win they will be awarded two mattresses.

Laerskool Oosterkruin has chosen Ithembelihle LSEN School in Primrose East as their beneficiary.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the attempt and Letitia rewarded them with something sweet once it was all over.
