One female driver died during vehicle pile-up

One female driver died and three other motorists sustained minor injuries after a pile-up of 22 vehicles on the N17 Freeway on Friday, July 14 in Springs.

William Ntladi, the district manager media liaison of Emergency Services Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said both west and east-bound sections experienced crashes.

“The cause of the accident is still unknown but it probably occurred because of a grass fire that was burning along the freeway,” said Ntladi.

He said when (DEMS) rescue teams arrived on the scene, the grass was still burning and wind was blowing smoke across the freeway.

“The incident was reported at exactly 2.40pm.

“Selection Park and Kwa-Thema rescue crews responded and rendered medical assistance,” Ntladi.

He said the deceased (a woman) was still trapped behind the steering.

“The Jaws of Life had to be used to recover her from the wreckage. Those who sustained minor injuries were transported to N17 Hospital for further medical care,” said Ntladi.

Both directions were temporarily closed to traffic.

The incident was handed over to Metro Police officials who conducted the on-scene investigations.
