ANC branch fixes house for Madiba

The ANC branch known as Fortune Kunene Voting District celebrated their Mandela Day on Tuesday, July 18 by starting to rebuild Nomsa Mkhwanazi’s family house in Vosloorus.

Mkhwanazi’s house was damaged by a storm in 2014.

Speaking to Kathorus MAIL, an excited Mkhwanazi explained how difficult life has been since the storm visited her family.

“Our two-bedroom house was badly damaged by a storm in 2014, as a result of which I was hospitalised because of the injury I sustained at the time.

“It is difficult because my husband Mike Sithole and I are both unemployed. What makes the situation even worse is that Sithole is blind.

“The fact that for the past three years I raised three children – Philisiwe (16), Mondli (2) and Dudu (8) – in the damaged house did not help the situation at all.

“My children had to do their homework in cold weather. The winter seasons were the most difficult ones, as we had to sleep in the house with damaged windows,” said Mkhwanazi.

She said during summer rains she had to ask for her family to sleep with neighbours because the roof was badly damaged.

“I am very happy with the renovation that is taking place. I can’t explain the feeling of joy. I hope God will help these children (referring to the youth who were busy building her house),” she said.

Katlego Mhlanga of Ward 44 ANC Youth Sector, said they had identified 10 houses to renovate.

“All the houses we have identified were all damaged by the same storm in 2014 but this house (referring to Mkhwanazi’s house) is the one that needed urgent attention. It was badly damaged,” said Mhlanga.

He said repairs of the other nine houses will follow.

Lebohang Khumalo of the ANC task team said they wanted to have the house completed by the end of the day.

“But because of the situation we found the house in and the sponsors who came at the last minute, we experienced some delays. But the official opening of the house will take place as soon as we finish building,” said Khumalo.

He said the media will be informed on time.
