Hlokomelang Batho celebrates Mandela Day

Hlokomelang Batho, a non-profit organisation based in Katlehong, celebrated their Mandela Day cleaning Freedom Square Park in Katlehong's Thwala section.

They also entertained the crowd at the park with a soccer team called “Power of the Game Changers FC”.

Sonnyboy Nxumalo, one of the founders, said they had to come up with a plan to give back to the community.

“Some of the Hlokomelang Batho group members are ex-convicts. We came back to the community that we had done a lot of wrong things to. But they didn’t judge us. Instead they gave us a second chance and treated us with respect. So we had to do something in return for them, just to thank them for the second chance,” said Sonnyboy.

He said, among other things they did for the community on the day, was giving them free food and cold drinks.

“What we are doing here today is to set an example to other convicts out there that you can be convicted and spend many years in jail but if you come back and do something good for your own community they will accept you back,” said Sonnyboy, who is also known as Power of the Game Changer.
