Mayor of Ekurhuleni urged to step down

The Ekurhuleni mayor and ANC regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina found himself in hot water following the election of Cyril Ramaphosa as the new ANC president. Masina, who is allegedly a staunch supporter of President Jacob Zuma, was in full support of Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma during the election of the new ANC president. He was quoted in a number of newspapers saying he would resign as mayor and remain an ordinary member of the ANC and as councillor if Ramaphosa won.

St Catherine’s class of 2017 makes history

The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric results were released at midnight, last Wednesday. Many private school learners waited in anticipation to find out if they had passed their final exams, and the learners of Parkhill Gardens’ St Catherine’s School were no exception. Twenty-five candidates, or 93 per cent of the students, achieved a degree pass, which will allow them to continue their studies at a university of their choice; this is the highest percentage of university exemption passes ever achieved by a Grade 12 class, and the school is thrilled.

Couple confess to murder

When returning home recently a Marathon informal settlement man found his neighbour with injuries to his upper body. “He called an ambulance, which took the victim to the Bertha Gxowa Hospital. The victim was declared dead when he reached the hospital,” explained communications officer for the Primrose police Sgt Styles Maome.

Many Germiston suburbs left without power

Many suburbs have been plunged into darkness last Monday morning. Eskom technicians were able to restore power to the areas by the evening.

The South African Weather Service asked residents to be prepared for severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and hot weather, last Tuesday. Motorists were reminded to take the necessary precautions when travelling in wet weather and encouraged them to reduce speed and increase their following distances.
