Alderman list approved by council

The metro’s council approved and announced councillors to the Alderman list.

The Alderman list, as approved by council, was announced at the metro’s first sitting of council for the year on Thursday at the Germiston council chambers.

Alderman is a title granted by council through its Conferment of Civic Honours policy.

A policy which outlines a precise qualifying criterion and has an accumulative point system put in place to deduce the best candidates.

Having an unbroken record of serving as an Ekurhuleni councillor is one of the requirements to qualify for consideration.

“Recognising and honouring those consistently entrusted to lead their communities is a significant aspect of nation-building.

“It is a reflection founded on the principles of ‘Batho Pele – Putting people first’, which council champions as its core value system through the metro,” said Sphelele Nxele, spokesperson of the office of the speaker.

The concept of Alderman not only exists at local government but it is internationally recognised as well.

Council also acknowledged and congratulated members of the Ekurhuleni Junior City Council

(JCC) who performed outstandingly in their matric exams.

Alderman Patricia Khumalo, speaker of council, who together with the office champions the JCC of the metro, congratulated the JCC members on their matric results.

“It’s a great honour to have been a part of grooming these young people.

“Fulfilling their JCC duties while staying focused at school and achieving superb results is indeed an excellent achievement.

“Thank you for shaping a complex model for future junior councillors.

“As you pursue your chosen careers, your journey gains momentum. I urge you to continue to strive for excellence,” she said.
