The top five stories on www.germistoncitynews.co.za for the week, January 20 to 26, were:

1. National News – Coloureds stand up for their culture as many believe there is a ‘war’ against Afrikaans:

Many coloured people in Gauteng believe there is a war against Afrikaans as a language and Afrikaans schools in particular, and that there is a perception that coloured people are okay with this.

2. EMPD and SAPS target hijacked buildings in Germiston

There are a number of abandoned buildings in Germiston which have been declared unsafe by the metro. Many of these buildings were abandoned by the legitimate owners due to economic frustrations and have since been targeted by criminals taking advantage of those desperately seeking accommodation.

3. Germiston FC search for players

Training is in full swing at Germiston City Football Club and the club is looking forward to the new season. With the new winter football season set to kick off in March, the club held trials at the Germiston City Sports Club in Vimy Ridge Road, Delville on January 20 and 21.

4. Update: Prohibition directive lifted, Prasa to conform to special conditions

Following a meeting between senior management of the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) on January 12, the RSR has taken a decision to lift the prohibition directive issued to Prasa with immediate effect and to invoke Section 45a of the National Railway Safety Regulator Act 16 of 2002 (as amended) in instances where Prasa has contravened the directive.

5. Power out in many Germiston suburbs again

Last Friday Ward 36 councillor Wendy Morgan informed the GCN there was once again a power outage affecting many Germiston suburbs.
