Top achievers of the Class of 2017 from Ekurhuleni had an exhilarating start to their academic year when the mayor of the metro, Clr Mzwandile Masina, awarded 220 deserving learners from poor families full bursaries to pursue higher education.
Masina awarded the bursaries at the annual Academic Excellence Award Ceremony at Emperors Palace on Wednesday.
He congratulated the matric achievers as well as the recent university graduates who were also holders of the city’s bursaries.
“It is precisely your victory against all odds that makes today’s event a special one.
“We commend all of you for a job well done and encourage you to maintain your spirit of hard work, dedication and commitment,” said Masina.
Sharing his views on the government’s recent announcement of free tertiary education for poor students, Masina said: “It is great that in this lifetime, no academically deserving child will be denied a chance at an education because of their family circumstances.”
The mayor’s office increased the city’s bursary fund from R10-million to R100-million.
“We are still committed to our mission of laying the groundwork for the establishment of the city’s first university,” he added.
“This will turn the tide against poverty, underdevelopment and low quality of life amongst our people.”
The new bursary intake adds to over 1 000 existing bursary holders and over 2 000 learners who are part of the Ekurhuleni Experiential Training Programme.
The bursary will cover full registration fees, examination fees, tuition material, textbooks, accommodation and other related expenses subject to approval by the city’s bursary committee.
