Passenger dies in N3 highway crash in Germiston
DEMS and other emergency services responded to an accident on the N3 highway.
A male passenger was killed instantly when the vehicle he was travelling in on Sunday rolled several times on the N3 South highway, at the Elands Interchange.
The male driver and two female passengers were critically injured in the crash.
After rolling, the vehicle came to rest in the middle island between the N3 South and Northbound carriageways.
“The crash happened at about 7.56am and it is alleged the vehicle was travelling at a very high speed on the southbound carriageway,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).
A rescue team and paramedics from the Germiston Central Fire Station, as well as paramedics from private ambulance services, swiftly responded to the scene after the call was received via the metro’s emergency call centre.

“Specialised rescue tools (Jaws of Life) had to be used to free all four patients from the wreckage.
“The injured were transported to various hospitals for further medical care,” said Ntladi.
The male patient and one of the female patients were transported to the Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital and the other female patient was airlifted to the Sunshine Hospital in Benoni by the ER24 and OnePlan Medical helicopter.
The deceased passenger’s body was removed from the scene by forensic pathologists after on-scene investigations were conducted by EMPD officers.
The N3 North highway had to be temporarily closed to traffic to create a landing zone for the medical helicopter.
“The cause of the crash is still undetermined and is under investigation by law enforcement units,” said Ntladi.
