Hlungwane, affectionately known as “Teacher”, was shot and killed close to the Makause Informal Settlement, in Main Reef Road, on April 7.
“It is alleged that two vehicles, a taxi and a BMW, were chasing each other along Main Reef Road,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, the communications officer for the Primrose police.
“The taxi stopped near Hlungwane’s vehicle, which was stopped on the side of the road, and the occupants opened fire, killing him.”
No arrests have been made to date, but police are continuing to investigate the incident.
Hlungwane joined the SAPS in 2009 and was based at the Primrose Police Station for his entire career.
The detective, who was well liked by the community, was also an avid football player, who played for the SAPS team on many occasions.
