Gauteng cops arrest 434 suspects in weekend operations

Gauteng police arrest 434 through weekend operations and recover 20 firearms.

Police across Gauteng took to the streets last weekend with the resolve to disrupt criminal activities that undermine the safety and security of the province’s citizens.

A number of integrated and intelligence-driven operations, including searches for wanted suspects, culminated in the arrest of more than 400 suspects for crimes such as murder, rape, possession of unlicensed firearms, and robbery.

As police in Ekurhuleni continue to tackle the challenge of business and house robberies, more than 78 suspects were arrested in the area for various offences, including crimes such as business and house robberies in addition to theft, murder and malicious damage to property.

In other operations held throughout Gauteng, a further 90 of these suspects were arrested in Johannesburg West, while 118 were arrested in the West Rand during roadblocks and stop-and-search operations.

Five suspects were arrested in Soweto, among them were suspects charged with the rape of an 11-year-old girl.

Further north the Tshwane North Cluster arrested more than 143 suspects on several different charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of drugs, possession of dangerous weapons, shoplifting and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, all of which are problematic in the area.

Twenty unlicensed firearms were recovered during the arrests in addition to stolen property.

All of the arrested suspects have appeared in courts around Gauteng.

The police expressed their gratitude for the information they continue to receive from the community, which assists in a number of arrests, and are appealing to the community to continue to call the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111 or SMS 32211 if they witness suspicious or criminals activities.
