Update: Emergency services respond to Rand Airport Road crash
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) respond swiftly to mutli-vehicle accident on Rand Airport Road.
Two people were killed and 20 injured during a four-vehicle pileup on Rand Airport Road, this morning (Monday).
“At about 6.44am, a Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue team and paramedics from the Germiston Central Fire Station swiftly responded to a motor vehicle accident.
“Two minibus taxis transporting passengers, a hatchback and a truck were all involved in the horrific crash,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison officer for DEMS.
When personnel arrived on the scene they found that three passengers and the driver from one of the taxis were still trapped in the wreckage.

“Rescuers had to use hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life) to rescue them.
“Unfortunately, the driver and one female passenger were declared dead on scene by paramedics, after they succumbed to their injuries.
“Four other passengers sustained critical injuries, while the remaining 16 passengers sustained serious to minimal injuries and all were transported to various medical facilities in Ekurhuleni by ambulance,” explained Ntladi.
It is alleged the accident was caused when one of the taxis tried to overtake the truck which was turning and crashed into the trailer before the other vehicles were involved in the pile-up.
The road was closed for the duration of the operations and the scene was handed over to EMPD officers for further investigation.
