Two passengers were killed instantly and 18 others, including the drivers, were hospitalised in a crash, on Saturday.
The collision, involving two light motor vehicles and a minibus taxi, took place at about 10.22pm in Palm Ridge.
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue teams and paramedics from the Palm Ridge and Zonkizizwe fire stations responded to the collision at the intersection of Palm Ridge and the M7 road after receiving the call from the call centre.
“Upon their arrival they found patients lying on the road, their injuries ranging from moderate to fatal.
“Pre-hospital medical treatment was initiated and unfortunately, two were declared dead on scene,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.
“One driver with critical injuries, was airlifted to Randfontein Hospital for further medical care.
“The rest of the patients were transported by ambulance to various hospitals in Ekurhuleni.”

The road had to be closed for the duration of the operations.
The scene was handed over to EMPD officers for further investigation.
