Police blamed for public drinking

Please allow me to add my two cents’ worth to share with others in our favourite community newspaper, the Kathorus MAIL.

I fully support the views raised by your reader Gladwin Moeketsi who is against public drinking. As much as I find public drinking unacceptable, I also blame the police for not arresting those who abuse and drink alcohol in public.

It is public knowledge that alcohol has been found to be the most destructive of all man-made drugs and yet the authorities treat alcohol as a light drug. Just look around you, Sir, and tell me how many people do you know who have been destroyed by alcohol?

Drinking leads to other crimes

For as long as the police continue to treat drinking in public as an insignificant and minor offence, crime and domestic violence will continue to escalate. The government should pass a law that makes drinking alcohol in public a serious offence.

Only then will members of the public understand that public drinking is not acceptable and is a punishable crime. Children tend to learn and adopt these bad adult behaviours and this creates a perpetual cycle of alcohol abuse among young people.
