Goodhope shacks destroyed in blaze

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters responded to a multiple shack fire in the Goodhope informal settlement, last Saturday.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters, from Germiston and Boksburg Central fire stations, responded to a multiple shack fire in the Goodhope informal settlement, last Saturday.

This was the third shack fire in recent weeks, with 17 shacks burning to the ground in the Makause informal settlement on March 23, and another 45 shacks were destroyed in a fire in the Delmore informal settlement on March 29.

“At around 2pm firefighters were called to the Goodhope informal settlement,” explained William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“On arrival, just six minutes after receiving the call, the team found five shacks engulfed by flames.

“A primary fire attack was initiated and the flames were contained and extinguished without further damage to other structures.

“No casualties were recorded on scene due to the fire.”

However, the families whose shacks had been destroyed were left with nothing.

“Disaster management’s intervention team was brought in to assist and offer disaster and humanitarian assistance to those affected by the blaze,” said Ntladi.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and being investigated by local authorities.
