Concerns over budget and proposed names in metro’s plan to rename geographical features

Residents raise concerns over proposed renaming of major roads and landmarks in the metro.

The DA in Ekurhuleni recently held a public meeting at the Alberton Civic Centre, co-hosted by Alberton DA ward councillors, to discuss the proposed renaming of geographical features in the metro.

At the meeting, residents allegedly indicated that the process the metro was set to undergo needed to be much more inclusive and transparent.

According to Clr Malcolm Maifala, DA shadow MMC for community services in Ekurhuleni, one of the issues raised at the meeting was that all names submitted to the public did not have a motivation for the proposed name or the person who proposed the name.

Furthermore, the community raised its concerns about the availability of a budget allocation towards the project, should the names be approved.

“We made it clear that it was necessary to engage the affected community at a time most convenient for them,” said Maifala.

“This is after we have found that the metro is engaging communities which are not directly affected by the proposed changes.”

The DA is allegedly set to engage with more communities to ensure that their voice is heard when it comes to issues relating to the proposed geographical name changes.

The GCN contacted the metro for comment but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.
