Community, local business and police join hands in the fight against crime
The Germiston SAPS celebrated Youth Month with their fifth annual Sports Against Crime campaign.
“Building a strong relationship with the community is of great importance to us.”
These were the words of Sgt Queen Sibeko from the Germiston SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit when the GCN spoke to her at the recent fifth annual Germiston SAPS Sports Against Crime campaign.
The annual event allowed police and other stakeholders, including, but not limited to, the Germiston SAPS Crime Prevention Youth Desk, EMPD, SANDF, Silkworth Recovery Centre and Germiston South-based company Johnson Matthey SA, a chance to not only address crime issues within Dukathole, but also to celebrate Youth Month.

The campaign started days before the sports day with a clean-up of the area, with special focus on the area surrounding the train station.
“The area is a known crime hotspot,” Sibeko explained.
“Criminals seem to target elderly residents the most.
“The grass was cut and the area cleaned up so that criminals cannot easily hide.”
Before several local sports teams took to the soccer field and netball court at the Dukathole Sports Grounds, the community met in Lower Boksburg Road for a march against crime in the area.
“Crimes in the area include rape, common robbery and murder,” said Sibeko.
“During the march, safety tip pamphlets were handed out to the community.”

The event was a great success and fun was had by all.
“A big thank you goes to Johnson Matthey SA and the community for their ongoing commitment,” said Sibeko.
